Other than surfing, I am yet to find an extra-curricular activity as satisfying as growing plants. Both share a level a unpredictability, a lack of control which adds an element of addictiveness. You never know whats going to happen. Ill sow a tray of seeds and find myself checking it multiple times. Same goes with my current tomato plants.
Gardening can often feel overwhelming, so after a 2+ year hiatus from growing plants Ive started small. Ive got tomatoes and cucumbers growing in large black pots and my ‘stoke’ has come back big time.
The advantage of growing in pots is you can position them in a sunny, ‘high traffic’ area. If I’m forced to walk past my plants every day I’m naturally drawn into the drama that is unfolding. The searching tentacles of the cucumber plant, the new fruits on the tomato plant, the first leaves from a seed stretching out…
I’ve noticed the earlier you’re involved in the process (growing from seed or a cutting) the higher the ‘stoke’ levels. Currently I’ve got seed trays of coriander, dill, basil and parsley going. To my surprise they have nearly all sprouted. I check them first in the morning and as soon as I get home from work, I cant miss them as they’re right by the back door. The plan is to create ‘herb tubs’ which I will give to my clients for Christmas but they are taking their time - I’ll check them tomorrow.
